Parts Used
Primarily the root; leaves are also used in some preparations.
Harvest
Harvest:
Ashwagandha roots are traditionally harvested in the late fall to early winter, once the aerial parts begin to die back and the plant enters dormancy. This timing ensures the plant’s vital energy is concentrated in the roots, yielding a more potent medicine. In most regions, this occurs after the berries have ripened and the foliage has begun to yellow or wilt.
The roots are then carefully dug, washed, and dried in the shade or with low heat to preserve their active compounds. Mature roots (typically from plants aged 6 months to 1 year) offer the best balance of strength and sweetness.
Preparations
Commonly prepared as a powder mixed with warm milk and honey, decoctions, tinctures, and capsules. Often combined with other herbs like Shatavari or Licorice to balance its effects.
