As we moved through the Yule season this Winter Solstice, I found myself delighting in the art of mocktail-making, exploring the wonderful variety of options from our collection while sprinkling in a little Three Wishes magic. Crafting mocktails with names that reflected the season truly set the tone for the gatherings with family and friends that were just around the corner.
One of my favorite moments was trimming the tree with little felt ornaments, pinecones, and jute ribbon bows, a festive symphony playing in the background. I poured myself a Frosted Evergreen, made with Free-Spirit Gin, tonic water, a squeeze of lime, and an all-important sprig of rosemary. The herb not only brought a festive aromatic quality but also held a deeper spiritual connection to remembrance. As I sipped, I reflected on the memories of the year and felt gratitude for all I had witnessed.
This time of year invites us to slow down, but it also requires effort to pull together these special moments, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. I often wonder, “How will I get everything done?” With alcohol at the forefront of many gatherings, the overindulgence in sweet treats and libations can sometimes leave us feeling sluggish, making the busy season more challenging. This year, I decided to embrace a different approach—mocktails.
As we set up the bar, experimenting with variations and finding inspiration in the season, our confidence grew. I was excited to share these creations with our guests.
The evening of our dinner party was particularly special, as it was the first event we hosted after renovating the house we’d purchased a couple of years ago. Seeing our loved ones gather in the space we’d transformed into a home filled my heart with joy. One of the favorite drinks of the evening was the Harvest Hearth, a crisp and spiced autumnal mocktail. Made with Free-Spirit Bourbon, organic apple cider, Modica Tart Cherry Old-Fashioned mixer, and seltzer, it was garnished with apple slices and a cinnamon stick—a big hit among our guests.
Later, we served Midnight Magic as an after-dinner treat. This decadent mocktail was a wonderful alternative to heavier desserts. It featured Free-Spirit Bourbon mixed with Modica Cacao Espresso Martini, milk or a creamy alternative, and was garnished with three coffee beans for luck and a pinch of cocoa powder. We enjoyed these by the fire in the music room as my husband played guitar, letting the evening settle into a warm and unforgettable memory.
Though the rush of the new year often sweeps us back into busyness, I want to honor the season and continue hosting gatherings in our home into January and beyond. Now, we have a plan for offering festive drink options that bring life and joy to every occasion. Whether it’s a large batch of Snowspring Fizz—a refreshing, herbaceous blend of Free-Spirit Tequila, Modica Cucumber Aloe Margarita mix, and seltzer—or the invigorating Solstice Glow, with Free-Spirit Bourbon, Modica Turmeric Ginger Mule, and ginger beer, these mocktails make every gathering feel magical.
