Anti-tussive

Anti-tussive agents work by soothing irritated respiratory tissues, calming the cough reflex, or addressing the underlying cause of the cough, such as inflammation or mucus buildup. Herbs with anti-tussive properties are often demulcents, which coat and protect the mucous membranes, or nervines, which calm the reflex. Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is a classic anti-tussive herb, providing a soothing, protective coating to the throat and respiratory tract. Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) reduces irritation and inflammation while calming spasmodic coughing. Wild cherry bark (Prunus serotina) is traditionally used to suppress persistent, dry coughs by directly calming the cough reflex. These herbs offer gentle, natural relief from coughing while supporting respiratory health.
