Cold sores

Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), which remains dormant in the body and can be reactivated by stress, fatigue, weakened immunity, or UV exposure. Symptoms include tingling, burning, or itching, followed by the formation of painful blisters. Herbal remedies used to manage cold sores include lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), which is applied topically to reduce the duration and severity of outbreaks due to its antiviral properties. Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) contains compounds that help inhibit viral replication and can be used as a topical paste.

Aloe vera can be used to soothe irritation and speed healing of the blister. Echinacea (Echinacea spp.) and elderberry (Sambucus nigra) are commonly used internally to boost immune function and help prevent future outbreaks. Maintaining a healthy immune system, reducing stress, and avoiding known triggers are also important measures for managing cold sore outbreaks effectively.
