Vulnerary

Vulnerary herbs are used to support the body’s natural healing processes for external injuries by reducing inflammation, promoting new tissue growth, and protecting the wound from infection. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is one of the most popular vulnerary herbs, known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that help heal wounds, burns, and skin irritations. Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) contains allantoin, which stimulates cell regeneration and is effective for wound healing and tissue repair, making it useful for cuts, bruises, and sprains.

Plantago major (common plantain) is also widely used as a vulnerary, with its mucilaginous properties that soothe and protect damaged skin, while St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is known to support healing and reduce inflammation in nerve-rich areas, making it effective for wounds that are painful. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is traditionally used for its ability to stop bleeding and promote wound healing, particularly for minor cuts and abrasions.

These vulnerary herbs can be used in salves, poultices, or ointments to treat wounds, bruises, burns, or skin abrasions. Ensuring cleanliness of the wound and providing adequate moisture while it heals are important steps for proper recovery.
Plantago major (common plantain) is also effective for soothing irritated skin, thanks to its mucilaginous and anti-inflammatory properties, which promote cooling and hydration. Aloe vera is frequently used for its ability to cool and moisturize the skin, providing instant relief for burns, rashes, or general skin irritation. Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), known for its astringent qualities, helps reduce swelling and calm irritated areas, while lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) can be applied in diluted form to reduce inflammation and soothe the skin.

Managing skin irritations involves a combination of topical remedies and preventive measures such as avoiding harsh soaps, using gentle natural moisturizers, and identifying and eliminating potential irritants to promote healthier skin.
